Tomas Venclova

Lithuania

Lithuanian poet, translator, literary critic, publicist, essayist, dissident and human rights activist. He is one of the founding members of the Lithuanian Helsinki Group. In 1977, he was expelled from the Soviet Union. In exile, he maintained close relations with Joseph Brodsky and Czesław Miłosz. Venclova is a professor of Slavic Languages and Literature at Yale University (USA). He is the winner of numerous awards and prizes, including Petrarca-Preis (2014), the Prize of Two Nations (2002) and the The Person of Tolerance of the Year Award from the Sugihara Foundation (2012).

Books in Ukrainian: In 2016, the Dukh i Litera publishing house released the book The Foreground and Prophecy of Eastern Europe by Tomas Venclova and Leonidas Donskis in Ukrainian translated by Heorhiy Yefremov and Oleh Kotsarev, and in 2017, Magnetic North: Conversations with Tomas Venclova by Tomas Venclova and Ellen Hinsey translated by Vyacheslav Tsyba.
