ACADEMIC VIEW: ACCENTS OF THE SCHOOL CURRICULUM
The second course of lectures on Ukrainian literature for teachers ‘Academic View: Accents of the School Curriculum’ highlights new topics and works – from Cossack chronicles to new editions of texts by contemporary writers. The course program covers interpretations of the texts that became part of the school curriculum as well as reveals a broader context, biographies and interesting details that can complement and diversify school lessons of literature. This time we are talking about Baroque historical and memoir prose, ‘Eneida’ by Ivan Kotlyarevsky, Taras Shevchenko, Marko Vovchok, ‘The Ship Master’ by Yuri Yanovsky, Valerian Pidmohylny, The New York Group of Ukrainian Poets, Volodymyr Vynnychenko, Pavlo Tychyna, Volodymyr Svidzinsky and contemporary authors.
Lecturers of the course are university professors, famous literary scholars and researchers of Ukrainian literature. Each lecture is created by author and presupposes active interaction with the audience of educators.

ENEIDA: FROM THE BURLESQUE PARODY TO THE NATIONAL EPIC
What hypostasis has the text that started a new era in the history of Ukrainian literature and literary language? What is its place among other works that follow the poem by Virgil? Rostyslav Semkiv tells about ‘Eneida’ as a burlesque poem and a sample of the national epic and its reception by artists and researchers of the following centuries.
BAROQUE HISTORICAL AND MEMOIR PROSE: COSSACK CHRONICLES. HISTORY OF RUTHENIANS
The Cossack chronicles of the 2nd half of the 17th – the middle of the 18th century not only capture important historical events, but also are valuable works of literary heritage. Among them there are the Samovydets Chronicle, and choricles by Hryhorii Hrabianka and Samiilo Velychko. A special place among the texts of that era takes the ‘History of Ruthenians’, which was used during the writing of historical fiction by Taras Shevchenko, Mykola Gogol, Yevhen Hrebinka, Mykola Kostomarov. Archbishop Igor (Yurii Isichenko) tells about the Cossack chronicles and ‘History of Ruthenians’, their historical context and meaning.
BIOGRAPHY AND WORKS BY TARAS SHEVCHENKO: AMBIGUOUS EPISODES AND DIFFICULT MOMENTS OF INTERPRETATION
Taras Shevchenko is believed to be the central figure in Ukrainian literature, but the perception of his works will not be complete without taking into account his works as a painter, details of the biography, and the context of time. What is true about the life of the artist and what remains legend? Oleksandr Boron has been studying Taras Shevchenko’s biography for many years and shares the little-known facts about the life and work of the poet and artist during the lecture.
MARKO VOVCHOK. THREE FATES OF THE WRITER: RUSSIAN, UKRAINIAN, FRENCH
Marko Vovchok is called ‘the Ukrainian George Sand’. She was admired, her talent was recognized, and the biography and texts of this writer still contain a lot of mysteries. She is the author of not only the ‘Narodni opovidannya (Folk Stories)’ and ‘Institutka’, but also valuable for literary critics texts like ‘Three Fates’, ‘Tiulevaia baba’, ‘Lymerivna’. Vira Aheieva talks about interesting details of the writer’s biography and the interpretation of her works.
VOLODYMYR VYNNYCHENKO: PARADOXES OF DESTINY AND ART
The biography of Volodymyr Vynnychenko is filled with vicissitudes, changes and moments of choice. Historical events, emigration and activities beside literature had a significant impact on his texts. Volodymyr Panchenko tells about the author of ‘Honesty With Oneself’, ‘Notes of the Pug-nosed Mephistopheles’, ‘The Solar Machine’, short story “Moment” and many dramas.
VALERIAN PIDMOHYLNY: HOW TO BECOME A CLASSIC AT THE START
Valerian Pidmohylny began to write early and in school years he published texts under the pseudonym Lord Lister. He had a creative way from adventure stories to intellectual prose. Olena Haleta, who made a profound research on the works by Pidmohylny, tells about the author of ‘The City’ and ‘A Little Touch of Drama’, his biography, the context of his time and the interpretation of works.
‘THE SHIP MASTER’ – THE DEBUT NOVEL BY YURI YANOVSKY
The 20’s of the XX century are characterized by a great interest from writers and artists to the new art – cinema. In Odesa a movie factory appeared and the city started to be called ‘the Hollywood on the Black Sea coast’. Many artists came to work here with scripts and ideas for implementation on the screen. Among those who arrived was Yuri Yanovsky, who was twenty five at that time. Later he mentioned this work experience in Odesa in his debut novel ‘The Ship Master’. Vira Aheieva tells about his autobiographical novel, which is unique in its style, artistic issues and bright characters, who had prototypes among acquaintances of Yanovsky.
THE POETRY OF UKRAINIAN MODERNISM: PAVLO TYCHYNA AND VOLODYMYR SVIDZINSKY
What unites, and what distinguishes the works of two poets of Ukrainian modernism – Pavlo Tychyna and Volodymyr Svidzinsky? What poems are valuable for this era? Liudmyla Kiselova tells about the logodicea in the poetry of Ukrainian modernism, musical structures in poems by Pavlo Tychyna, floristry in the works by Volodymyr Swidzinsky, and many other things.
NEW YORK ON THE MAP OF UKRAINE: WRITERS OF THE NEW YORK GROUP OF POETS IN THE HISTORY OF UKRAINIAN LITERATURE
The history of this association of Ukrainian poets started 20th of December in 1958 in one of the coffee houses in New York. On that day Patricia Kylyna, Bohdan Boychuk and Yurii Tarnavsky gave the name to the group and decided to publish the ‘New Poetry’magazine. Olena Haleta talks about Bohdan Boychuk, Yurii Tarnavsky, Bohdan Rubchak, Emma Andijewska, and other artists from the New York group of Ukrainian Poets, their views and sources of inspiration.
UKRAINIAN CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE: WHAT TO READ AND WHAT TO RECOMMEND TO SCHOOLCHILDREN?
