The path of the “traveller” (visitor of the exhibition) is laid through 8 halls, which alternately represent traditional concepts of Japanese culture: Void, Island, Garden, Form, Bakemono, Do, Seasons and Meisho. Each concept will be conveyed through works of traditional and new media arts, images, objects, texts, poetry, comments and notes.

Also visitors of the exhibition will get an opportunity to learn the art of origami, take selfie in real kimono, join a traditional tea ceremony and find out what is Karakuri. Various master classes for adults and children are planned in the educational program, including a Manga comics creation workshop by Japanese artists from the Japan Cartoonists Association. In addition, battles stage directors of Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill The Bill” – The Samurai Sword Artists KAMUI will introduce Japanese art of fighting to the visitors of the exhibition.

The exhibition is held at Mystetskyi arsenal from November 9th to December 17th, 2017.

project co-curator

We have created for our visitor various experiences, with a help of various media, a journey through images and concepts that are important to the Japanese society and conveyed both by traditional and contemporary art, – says co-curator of the exhibition, Deputy Director of the Museum and Exhibition Activities of Mystetskyi arsenal Julia Vaganova: Most of us has the idea of Japan that is formed by cliches like “Kimono”, “Sushi”, “Harakiri”, “Cherry blossom”. But today Japan is one of the most technologically advanced countries, and Japanese contemporary artists collect awards at various media art festivals. Traditional and new are closely intertwined in this culture. Japanese contemporary media art often uses the themes and experiences laid down many years ago. Therefore, it is not perceived as something incomprehensible or artificial.
