Nature Morte is a film about the famous Italian still-life painter Georgio Morandi, who is also mentioned in Francis Alÿs’ prose poem in this space. The film shows his images, paintings and photographs in a book. Hamza Halloubi juxtaposes the paintings made by Morandi with images of the political events and social upheavals of his time. It is a reading of Morandi’s work in relation to the unstable history of the last century, termed by the Marxist historian Eric Hobsbawm ‘the age of extremes’. Similar to Alÿs’ work, the film questions the relationship between the artist and the political and artistic news of the time.
