Marinus Boezem’s Momentum can be seen as a tribute to personal mythology, yet simultaneously raises questions about the increasing amount of monuments that appear all around the world. Never before were so many events and issues commemorated. In an era marked by civil protest and revolt, the desire to commemorate and the power of symbols cannot be underestimated. Boezem’s biased position towards this desire is expressed in this work, which addresses both the trivial as well as the transcendental qualities of monuments and shrines. Momentum also reminds us of the tension between official commemorative narratives and the vulnerability of personal memories.
