Rebirth and Apocalypse in Contemporary Art

Format of the project

ARSENALE will become a unique interpretation of the conventional forms of art biennial by joining the few ones that focus on the museum space – in particular, Whitney Biennial (USA), and Tate Biennial (UK).

According to world standards the biennial project usually involves about 15% of domestic artists. This is a unique chance for Ukrainian artists to become on a par with the authors that define the face of world art.

MYKHAILO KULYNIAK

Minister of Culture of Ukraine

Ukraine has been waiting for such a powerful cultural initiative as the First Kyiv Biennial for a long time. I believe that this innovative project will certify new benchmarks in the state cultural politics. Due to the First Kyiv Biennial Ukraine will present its new image to the international art community – the image of the country of the XXI century.

NATALIA ZABOLOTNA,

General Director of Mystetskyi Arsenal,

Commissar of ARSENALE

ARSENALE led us to the idea that this is an exceptional chance to outline the new position of Ukraine, which it deserves in the contemporary world. The powerful and energetic Mystetskyi Arsenal space will definitely allow the leading artists to express theirselves, as well as to present new Ukrainian names in the global artistic context.

DAVID ELLIOTT,

Curator of ARSENALE

In my opinion, the international art community’s perception of Ukraine as some kind of  post-Soviet hinterland  has changed... It is therefore a great challenge for me to organise the First Kyiv international Biennial of contemporary art, that not only opens the unique space of Mystetskyi Arsenal to the world, but also offers a new vision of the country, its art, and its place in the world.

Project Urgency

Visual art is the only branch of contemporary culture, which so far has no large-scale representative forum in Ukraine. The First Kyiv internation Biennial of contemporary art – ARSENALE – aims to fill the available niche, becoming analogous to the world famous biennale.

Biennial will strengthen the status of Kyiv as one of the dynamic world cultural centers. Biennial will be the crucial factor in overcoming stereotypes on the perception of Ukraine and will favor the formation of its image as a developed European country.

The construction of one of Europe's largest museum complexes – Mystetskyi Arsenal – is an important cultural precedent nowadays.

It leads to the high interest of the international community in the The First Kyiv internation Biennial of ocntemporary art – ARSENALE.

Audience

and attendance

Broad audiences, professional viewers from Ukraine and the world are expected.

For instance, 651 thousands people visited "XI Documenta";

281 thousands people attended "X Sydney" in 2004;

15 million people visited 53rd Venice Biennial within six months of the exhibition in 2009.

Biennial Manifesta, which took place in two provincial Spanish cities Murcia and Cartagena, had an audience of about 300 thousands people.

The first and oldest biennale is Venice Biennale. Then the biennials in the cities of United States, Britain, France and Spain started in a bid to expand geography of the world art pilgrimage and re-establish the status of cultural centers.

About 200 biennial take place in the world annually. There are specialized among them, such as photography or architectural biennale. Large exhibition projects are conducted with different intervals and with specific tasks. For instance, Manifesta has always a new place, and this strategy aims to draw attention to the politically and socially troubled regions of the world.

Biennial are initiated not only by the artistic community, but also by the state with the aim to promote its own cultural policies, strengthen the country's image and encourage cultural tourism.

Mystetskyi Arsenal

Mystetskyi Arsenal is the National cultural-art and museum complex. It is located in the Old Arsenal building, which was constructed in 1783-1801 by the general-lieutenant Johann Meller for the needs of the Kiev garrison in the place, where was Ascension maiden monastery. During XIX and XX centuries Arsenal maintained its original military purposes.

Beginning from the period of independence in Ukraine Arsenal got the status of cultural and artistic institution, and finally in 2003 received the name Mystetskyi Arsenal.

In 2011, despite the ongoing reconstruction, Mystetskyi Arsenal has implemented a number of resonance major cultural projects, such as the International forum ART-KYIVcontemporary, International Week of Contemporary Art “Space Odyssey 2011”, retrospective of the avant-garde artist Vasil Yermilov, exhibition “Independent. Ukrainian art 1991-2011” etc.

The territory of Mystetskyi Arsenal museum complex is spreading over 10 hectares,. The exposition area will be 63 000 sq.m, which will turn into the largest Europe cultural destination in the nearest years.
